WHAT IS A DUANJU?
Duanju, sometimes translated as microdrama, is a vertical mini-series designed for smartphones. Fast-paced and rhythmic, it offers episodes ranging from one to three minutes. Originating in China, the format is now experiencing international growth and inspiring a new generation of creators. The word "Duanju" comes from the Chinese 短剧 (duǎnjù), which means "mini-drama." Depending on usage and platforms, the format may also be referred to by other names such as micro-series, vertical short series, vertical fiction, mobile mini-series, short drama, vertical short drama, micro-drama, short-form series, mobile-first series, or even 微短剧 (wēi duǎnjù) and 竖屏短剧 (shùpíng duǎnjù).
